Bakery Truck Hands Out Bread To Stranded Motorists

Following a blizzard that left motorists stranded for up to 20 hours on the I-95 highway in Virginia, one of the USAs busiest routes, a Baltimore bakery delivery, also stranded on the interstate gave away loaves of bread and rolls to motorists.

The Daily Mail reports that motorists were stuck overnight on the highway due to the blizzard, when the driver of a Schmidt Baking Company truck began handing out bread on the morning of Tuesday 4 January.

A stranded couple, Casey Holihan and husband John Noe, who had spent the night trapped on the Interstate, had spotted the truck, contacted the companys customer service, and were put into contact with Chuck Paterakis, a co-owner of H&S Bakery which operates Schmidt Baking Company.

Paterakis instructed Ron Hill, the driver of the truck to give a package of rolls and one loaf of bread to any person in need. Holihan and Noe helped Hill distribute them to dozens of stranded motorists.

We kind of called them on a whim, Holihan said. We definitely did not think anything would come of it.

She added that it was the best loaf of bread I have ever eaten in my entire life and that some exhausted motorists were moved to the point of tears by the gift of bread.

The winter storm blasted the mid-Atlantic on Monday 3 January with unusually heavy snowfall for the region. The snow, coupled with a string of bad crashes, paralysed a 50-mile stretch of I-95 between Richmond and Washington, D.C. stranding many overnight.

The chaos was finally resolved late Tuesday when highway crews were finally able to clear the roadways of snow and ice allowing trapped vehicles to proceed.
