Ryanair Sells Woman The ‘World’s Saddest Bacon Sandwich’

The humble bacon sandwich is a simple but tasty snack, and you might think that it’s rather difficult to get wrong. However, while aeroplane food is not known for its Michelin stars, one passenger on a recent Ryanair flight had a memorable meal for the wrong reasons.

The Express reports that racing driver Aimee Woods was served what she dubbed the ‘world’s saddest bacon sandwich’, which consisted of two rather small rashers of bacon resting on dry bread, with no butter, sauce, or salad, and was charged €5.50 (£4.71).

Aimee said she didn’t send the offing sandwich back for a refund as she was ‘starving’. She sent a photo of the bacon butty to her friend and author Liz Nugent, who tweeted the pic, saying that she wasn’t sure if it qualified as what had been advertised.

Responding to the tweet, one person said: “It’s like a thought experiment in how far the concept of ‘bacon sandwich’ can be whittled down before the thing falls apart. I’m enjoying Ryanair’s new role as Avante Garde philosophers.”

Other commenters suggested that perhaps Ryanair charges extra for butter, in reference to the company’s various add-ons, such as checked-in baggage and seat reservations.

Aimee responded: ‘I also had a lovely flight and the cabin crew were class. I just found the sandwich humorous and slightly overpriced. Still ate it though.

‘I doubt people will book a flight based on the quality of a sandwich to be fair.’
