Top Tips When Making Sourdough

Sourdough has become an incredibly popular way of making bread in recent years, and breadmaking itself has become incredibly popular in 2020.

The UK population has not only flocked to speciality bread suppliers to get their fix but also baked over a billion loaves during the lockdown.

When flour and yeast ran into shortages, people turned to creating sourdough starters and making bread from scratch.

Here are some top tips when attempting to bake this incredibly unique and personal bread.


Consider Your Starter And Flour

Sourdough, unlike baking methods that use yeast and flour, requires more preparation. Specifically, you need to create a sourdough starter.

How you make your starter will determine how your bread will turn out. You start by stirring 200g of flour and 200ml of lukewarm water together in a mason jar or similar non-metallic container, and the flour you choose for this will determine how long the starting process will take.

You leave your starter mix uncovered and somewhere warm overnight so it will begin to ferment. From there you keep adding until it starts to bubble and become active.

The flour you choose, whether it is white, wholewheat or a mixture will affect the taste as well as how long the starter takes to take effect.


Find A Warm Spot

Sourdough needs to be warm. It needs to be between 27°C and 32°C to activate quickly. It may therefore need to be placed on top of a warm appliance or near a radiator to be at the right temperature.


Plan Your Feeding And Refreshing

You will generally need to feed it with more flour and water regularly so it is important to schedule this. If you are planning to bake a lot of bread, keep feeding it daily with 100g of flour and 100ml of water.

However, you can also store it in the fridge, and when you feed it again with flour and water it should bubble again and be ready to use.
